Black Boxes Online builds upon the physical installation IT’S TIME TO OPEN THE BLACK BOXES!
A participatory digital art project founded on the principle “think global - act local.”
It invites people across the world to submit one single word online in response to two universal questions:“What threatens you the most?”
“What are you most eager to preserve?”The result is a continuously growing open-source database of global hopes and fears.
Real-time word-maps visualize the evolving concerns of citizens worldwide - forming a living portrait of contemporary society. -
To build the foundations of the online version of a physical art installation - at a global scale, open, interactive, and ready for participation from anyone, anywhere.
-
We worked closely with artist Danae Stratou to transform this powerful artistic work into a fully digital, open, and participatory platform.
OPEN THE BLACK BOXES now offers real-time cultural and statistical material online, accessible for public use.
Through visually engaging formats, the platform reflects an ever-changing snapshot of society - showing how people collectively respond to the issues that affect us most. The project sits at the intersection of art, democracy, and political action, using digital participation as a medium for expression and reflection.
Originally inaugurated in Athens in 2012, the project evolved into its digital form by 2016–2017.
Today, Open the Black Boxes remains active and accessible - continuing to invite global participation, dialogue, and introspection.
